Give your views on revamped forestry plans for Kinneil Woods

All who enjoy Kinneil Woods are encouraged to give their views on a fresh management plan for Kinneil Woods, and/or to join two consultation walks in the woods which are being led by those putting forward the plans.

Areas of overgrown conifers in Kinneil Woods still need to be felled under the fresh forestry plan

People have until 3 August to complete a survey being conducted by the Green Action Trust on behalf of Falkirk Council, which owns and manages Kinneil Estate and Woods. The 90-minute walks are taking place at 6.30pm on Thursday 24 July or 11am on Saturday 2 August, starting from the car park at the south-west corner of Kinneil Estate’s walled garden. Details of the free walks and how to register can be found on the consultation page.

The goal of the survey is to inform a woodland management plan which the Council say will help to unlock grant funding for improvements to make Kinneil a better place for people and wildlife.

The Green Action Trust would like to know how you use the site presently, what you like about the woods and what you feel could be improved. They also want to find out your opinion on the necessary felling work that is to be scheduled, and what species you would like to see replanted. The plan to fell and replant the woodlands (originally in 4 phases) was previously agreed in 2008 as part of a ‘Long-Term Forest Plan’ (LTFP) for the estate. A 2012 copy of the original plan is available here. The first part of the LTFP has already been delivered in the mid-2010s, but the rest of the LTFP was never completed. The proposal for the next phase of woodland management is an updated version of this plan. The areas already completed and areas now proposed to be felled/replanted can be seen here.

Please take a few minutes to answer the survey questions. The Council say that whilst all suggestions regarding woodland management will be warmly welcomed, financial constraints may mean that some are outwith the scope of implementation.

Further information can be obtained by contacting contact@greenactiontrust.org.

The consultation is taking place at the same time as the Council’s separate exercise to seek views on the overall Kinneil Masterplan 2026-36, the subject of our previous news story. Those interested in the woods may also wish to read Appendix 1 (from p48) of the main draft Masterplan consultation document, which touches to some extent on the woodland habitat and management strategy.
